Safe Haven Initiative
Trauma-Informed Youth & Athlete Protection
The Safe Haven Initiative™ (SHI) is a cornerstone program of MJS Creatives™, designed to confront systemic barriers faced by system-impacted youth and young athletes across Connecticut and beyond. SHI was born from decades of observed failures in state-run child welfare, juvenile justice, and educational systems—systems that have historically fractured families, retraumatized youth, and disrupted educational and athletic continuity. Rather than replicate these structures, MJS Creatives™ developed Safe Haven as a community-centered stabilization and protection ecosystem, keeping youth rooted in their communities while restoring safety, structure, and opportunity.
Unlike traditional nonprofits, SHI is fully integrated within the MJS Creatives™ ecosystem, aligning with the organization’s mission in youth development, athletics, education, media, and trauma-informed governance. The program is built on principles of youth and athlete protection, family preservation, trauma-informed reintegration, ethical oversight, and recovery-based participation restoration, ensuring that every intervention prioritizes dignity, stability, and empowerment.
Safe Haven was created to restore pathways for youth who have experienced homelessness, abuse, poverty, court involvement, or disruption from child welfare systems. Its mission is to provide trauma-informed development pipelines that combine athletics, healing, mentorship, behavioral skill-building, and educational restoration. SHI reconnects youth to schools through transcript recovery, credit recovery, and attendance stabilization, while simultaneously rebuilding families wherever possible through certified Family Restoration Teams. When reunification is not feasible, Safe Haven provides adoption-ready pathways with vetted, culturally aligned families—all while maintaining continuous mentorship and oversight.
The initiative also interfaces with governing athletic bodies (CIAA, leagues, and schools) as a certified external program partner, ensuring that youth participation and eligibility are restored safely and professionally.
Program Components
Eligibility & Participation Recovery: Safe Haven supports youth in restoring athletic and extracurricular engagement through tiered return-to-participation tracks, trauma-informed coaching, individualized development plans, and mandatory mentorship circles. Participation is grounded in safety, stability, and accountability, not punishment or exclusion.
Therapeutic Athletics & Activity Framework: All SHI-supported athletic programming transforms sport into a healing-centered environment. Coaches and officials are trauma-informed and certified, mental health clinicians are onsite or on-call, and high-risk events are supported with crisis-response personnel. Programming includes therapeutic scrimmages, restorative skill sessions, emotional regulation drills, team-based rites of passage, and milestone-linked progression.
Crisis-to-Classroom™ Reintegration: SHI restores academic stability through transcript rebuilding, GED and alternative education alignment, attendance tracking, tutoring, academic mentorship, and classroom reintegration coaching. All academic progress is monitored via secure MJS Creatives systems, ensuring transparency, accountability, and measurable impact.
Family & Legal Advocacy: SHI’s ethical mandated reporting framework screens concerns through trained Wellness Officers, prioritizing family stabilization before escalation. Family Restoration Teams composed of trauma clinicians, school advocates, youth mentors, and community leaders work to stabilize households and reunify families wherever possible. When emergency placement is necessary, youth are placed with Safe Haven-Designated Families, not state facilities, maintaining oversight and reunification as the primary goal. Adoption-ready pathways are pursued only when reunification is demonstrably impossible. SHI also provides legal advocacy, youth rights education, and case coordination to ensure that all stakeholders are supported.
Workforce & Vocational Exposure: Participants gain practical exposure to MJS Creatives operations and partner organizations through officiating, scoring, media production, athletic training, paid internships, and mentorship roles. These pathways create sustainable, multi-generational workforce opportunities, preparing youth for long-term career success.
Governance & Accountability
Safe Haven is governed by MJS Creatives Executive Leadership, overseen by a Safe Haven Oversight Committee, with guidance from clinicians, educators, parent advocates, and formerly system-impacted adults. Reporting is transparent, with quarterly internal performance summaries, biannual public impact reports, and secure dashboards. SHI adheres to strict compliance, equity standards, medical best practices, and financial transparency.
Financial Model & Sustainability
Funding for Safe Haven comes from a combination of MJS Creatives operations, program revenue, mission-aligned sponsorships, grants, and media/licensing initiatives. Funds are utilized to support trauma-informed staff, academic and stabilization tools, guardianship and placement stipends, transportation and nutrition, workforce development, public education campaigns, and legal and advocacy partnerships—ensuring maximum program impact with measurable outcomes.
